Music is continually changing. Never static and always exciting, the music industry has reached lives since the dawn of time. Music is how we express ourselves, and cultures have always embraced music as a means of storytelling and expression. Through music, we create community, and the global music scene has seen its fair share of evolution. Amer Sal Mohammed explains further.
Amer Sal Mohammed, publicly known as Amer SM, is a digital and visual artist who creates work for high-end artists such as Drake and Snoop Dogg. Famous for his custom work that embraces modern art with pop culture Amer SM has observed the music scene from a unique perspective. “In my line of work, I have to keep an eye on trends, and they change so quickly,” states Amer. “That is what makes the music scene so amazing. It’s fluid. It moves, and it moves us with it.”
Amer has seen tremendous change in the music scene, especially as the 21st century rolls in. “Digital media has completely uprooted how we look at music, creation, collaboration, and even fan engagement,” states Amer. “It’s broadened our audiences and given more talent more access to niche fan groups that truly relate to their music.” Amer insists that music has evolved into a more “on-demand” scene where fans are looking for intimate engagement and the ability to stream immediately.
“I think digital media has opened our world. Now anyone can upload a song to YouTube, Spotify, essential any social or streaming platform and be heard in a matter of minutes,” explains Amer. “It’s given artists both big and small more room to experiment with their crafts and be themselves. This era is producing some of the best music all due to the creative license digital media affords us.” Amer believes that niche audiences are the future, and as digital media spurs inspiration that creates that, the global music scene will continue to develop.
“I’m excited about the future, and it’s already changed the way I look at artwork and creativity,” says Amer. “Digital media has put me in touch with more artists than ever before, and in the music industry, there is always room for more. Collaboration inspires real growth.” As an artist, Amer Sal Mohammed believes evolution is essential, and he is embracing it as the industry moves deeper into the 21st century.
