Doechii Fires Back at “Industry Plant” Claims on Surprise SZA Collaboration “Girl, Get Up”

Doechii isn’t holding anything back on her latest release. The rising rap star has teamed up with SZA for a surprise new track titled “Girl, Get Up,” which dropped unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 30. On the song, Doechii directly confronts critics who have tried to dismiss her success by labeling her an “industry plant.”

In a sharp, defiant verse, Doechii addresses the rumors head-on, calling out online chatter and blog speculation while asserting that her rise is the result of years of hard work, not manufactured hype. She makes it clear that her chart success was earned, pushing back against narratives that question how a Black woman could reach the top on her own terms.

Produced by Jay Versace, the track flips the instantly recognizable percussion from Birdman and Clipse’s classic “What Happened to That Boy,” giving the song both nostalgic weight and modern edge. Doechii also hints that this won’t be the last time she addresses her critics, teasing that deeper conversations around misogyny and hate will be explored on her upcoming album. Reflecting on her journey, she contrasts years of struggle with her current success, framing her story as one of resilience and persistence.

SZA adds a smooth, dynamic chorus that perfectly balances Doechii’s intensity. Her vocals glide effortlessly from a relaxed tone into a striking falsetto, elevating the track and reinforcing the message of self-belief and inner strength. The collaboration marks the second time the two TDE labelmates have worked together, following their 2022 pairing on “Persuasive (Remix)” from Doechii’s EP she / her / black bitch.

“Girl, Get Up” arrives at the close of a landmark year for Doechii. Known as the “Swamp Princess,” she made waves at the 2025 Grammy Awards with a standout performance and an emotional acceptance speech after becoming only the third woman to win Best Rap Album for Alligator Bites Never Heal. Her words resonated deeply as she encouraged Black women everywhere to reject limiting stereotypes and believe in their place at the top.

With momentum firmly on her side, Doechii is poised for another big night at next year’s Grammys, where she’s nominated for five awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Rap Song for her Gotye-sampling hit “Anxiety.” If “Girl, Get Up” is any indication, she’s just getting started.
