Director South Boy is ready to tell the story hip-hop fans never got: Surviving Trap Music: The Untold Story of Gucci Mane & S.Y.S. The upcoming film explores Gucci’s beginnings in the Atlanta underground and his split from the S.Y.S. crew.
Featuring never-before-seen clips and rare recordings, the doc highlights claims that “Icy” was originally created by 4Tre. Gucci denies the allegations, but the tension forms the emotional core of the project.
Producer Wong Lorene says, “It’s about trust, art, and heartbreak.” Co-producer Raymond Forchion adds that it’s “a passionate piece of hip-hop history” meant to preserve the legacy of those who started the Trap era.
The film also touches on Gucci’s present life—his struggles with mental health, the exploitation he’s faced, and how his wife helps him manage it. Though no date is confirmed, Surviving Trap Music promises to be one of hip-hop’s most revealing documentaries yet.
