On his latest single Before Hip Hop, Ice Cube reflects on life before rap dominated the culture. The song doubles as a history lesson and a reminder that many of the struggles people blame on hip hop existed long before it. Cube’s delivery is confident, and while it doesn’t break new ground, it solidly reinforces his place as one of rap’s elder statesmen.
