J. Cole Makes a Powerful Case for Lil Durk, Pointing to the Message Behind “All My Life”

J. Cole is stepping up for Lil Durk at a pivotal moment in the Chicago rapper’s ongoing legal battle, offering a personal account of the man he came to know through their Grammy-winning collaboration, “All My Life.”

In a letter submitted in support of Durk’s latest bid for release on bond, Cole looked beyond headlines and legal allegations to highlight a side of the rapper that he believes deserves consideration: an artist determined to use his platform to promote growth, peace, and a different path for the next generation. The letter was included in a new bond package filed ahead of a November 4 hearing. The Source Complex

Cole’s strongest example was “All My Life,” their 2023 collaboration that connected Durk’s melodic street-rap style with a message about overcoming hardship and making better choices. Cole recalled initially hesitating over the song’s openly positive direction. Durk, however, believed that message mattered—and that Cole’s involvement could help it reach even more listeners.

That conversation changed Cole’s perspective. He described Durk as someone who wanted to push a message of change and maturity, even if it meant stepping outside expectations associated with his music. Cole also recalled visiting a juvenile detention center in Cleveland, where young people repeatedly brought up Durk and connected with his story and music.

The letter arrives as Durk, born Durk Banks, seeks release from federal custody following his acquittal in September on charges in a separate murder-for-hire case. He remains detained while facing other federal charges, which he has not been convicted of, and his next trial is scheduled for 2027. The court has not granted his latest bond request.

Cole’s support adds a personal voice to a legal fight with serious consequences. His message is not a ruling on the case, but a request for the court to consider the impact he believes Durk can have beyond music. In a culture where an artist’s public image can sometimes eclipse their full story, Cole is asking the judge to look at the person behind the records—and the possibility of positive influence that “All My Life” represented.
