One of the biggest surprises from Summer Game Fest 2026 was the announcement that Tupac Shakur will appear as a character in the upcoming video game Stranger Than Heaven.
Developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the team behind the acclaimed Like a Dragon and Yakuza series, confirmed that Tupac’s likeness will be featured in the game with approval from his estate.
Tupac Becomes “Amaru”
In the game, Tupac will appear under the name “Amaru,” a direct reference to his middle name.
Born Tupac Amaru Shakur, the legendary rapper’s name was inspired by Tupac Amaru II, a historical figure who led an uprising against Spanish colonial rule. By naming the character Amaru, the developers are paying tribute to a significant part of Tupac’s identity and personal history.
The estate’s approval is particularly noteworthy, as posthumous uses of Tupac’s image and likeness have often been carefully managed and selectively licensed.
Snoop Dogg Unveils The Surprise
The reveal was delivered by none other than Snoop Dogg during Summer Game Fest.
Snoop explained that including Tupac felt natural because his influence continues to resonate decades after his passing.
According to Snoop, Tupac’s spirit and legacy remain deeply connected to modern culture, making the collaboration a fitting addition to the ambitious project.

A Massive Multi-Generational Story
Stranger Than Heaven is being described as an expansive action-adventure epic spanning five cities and multiple eras of modern Japanese history.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has long been praised for blending real-world culture, entertainment, and historical influences into its games. The inclusion of real-life artists as playable or story-driven characters appears to be an extension of that creative philosophy.
