Maria BC has announced a new album titled Marathon, set for release on February 27 via Sacred Bones. The project follows their 2023 release Spike Field and signals a refined creative direction for the Oakland-based artist.
Alongside the announcement, Maria BC has shared the album’s title track, accompanied by a video directed by F. Saber Sutphin. The song reflects on conflicted nostalgia, using Marathon gas stations as a quiet but evocative symbol of memory, routine, and emotional in-betweenness.
In a press release, Maria BC explained that the new album represents a shift in focus: spending less time on dense production and recording, and more on songwriting itself. “The result, I think, is more thematically consistent, lyrically speaking, and more concise,” they said. “I set out to make something more dynamic and varied.”
That approach appears to shape Marathon into a tighter, more intentional body of work—one that prioritizes emotional clarity and narrative cohesion without sacrificing experimentation.
The video for “Marathon” is available now, offering an early glimpse into the tone and themes of the upcoming album, ahead of its February 27 release.
