Authenticity
“Music is a tough business, and the reality is a lot less glamourous than you think,” explains Frank Fourie. “To make it big in this highly competitive industry, it is going to take talent, hustle, patience, and long hours. Yet, if music truly is your calling, these things will be worth it. To have a chance to make it in music, you must truly love your craft and be completely authentic—both with yourself and your listeners. You have to put your heart into your work, and there can be no exceptions.”
Time
Music is not a 9-to-5 profession. Frank Fourie wants people to know that it can take a long time to get even a small break in this business. Artists need to constantly rehearse to be in top shape, plus they can be on the road a lot. Working late is another trademark in the music business because concerts usually take place at night. If you are not ready to be flexible with your time and schedule, music might not be the right career choice for you.
Talent
“Take a step back and assess your musical talent,” says Frank Fourie. “If you cannot sing or play an instrument, the odds are not in your favor.” However, this does not necessarily disqualify you from a career in the music business. There are countless non-performing opportunities available, like a music producer, songwriter, studio manager, stagehand, etc. If you love music, consider the talents you do have and find a way to combine these elements. Those with a true calling for music will be happy playing even the smallest gigs because they love what they do. This circles back to authenticity is a must.
