Reason Pushes Back Against Viral Misinterpretation Of His Kendrick Lamar “GNX” Comments

Reason is speaking out after social media users twisted his recent comments about Kendrick Lamar and his album GNX into something much more negative than he intended.

The former Top Dawg Entertainment rapper recently appeared on The Bootleg Kev Podcast, where the conversation turned toward Kendrick Lamar’s 2024 album and its impact on the West Coast rap scene.

During the discussion, Bootleg Kev mentioned how he hoped GNX would help create more momentum for other West Coast artists outside of Kendrick himself. Reason responded by acknowledging Kendrick’s ability to successfully execute nearly any sound or style while also admitting that some listeners simply did not connect with the album’s overall direction.

Importantly, Reason made it clear that he personally enjoyed the project.

He also discussed the artists featured on the album and whether some of them fully capitalized on the exposure afterward. According to Reason, stronger follow-up releases from certain collaborators could have extended the album’s cultural momentum even further.

“If Dot would’ve picked artists that are more consistent in their art to be on there, I feel like post-GNX would’ve went differently,” Reason explained during the interview.

However, once clips and summaries of the discussion began circulating online, some pages framed his comments as direct criticism toward Kendrick Lamar’s artistic choices and execution.

Reason quickly pushed back against that narrative on Twitter.

“This tweet is SO FAR from what I actually said it’s sick,” he wrote in response to one viral post. “The internet is a scary place because most ppl will not watch this video. They’ll just read this tweet and respond.”

Some fans may have been especially quick to interpret the comments negatively because of Reason’s complicated history with TDE. Before leaving the label, the Carson rapper publicly discussed frustrations surrounding his experience there and eventually transitioned into an independent career.

Despite that history, Reason’s recent comments did not appear to come from a place of hostility toward Kendrick Lamar.

Instead, the conversation centered more around the broader West Coast scene and how supporting artists can maintain momentum after receiving major exposure from a superstar platform.

Reason is currently focused on his own independent run following the release of his latest project, Moving Towards Love PINK. Meanwhile, speculation surrounding new Kendrick Lamar music continues to grow online as fans wait to see what the Compton superstar does next.

Although fans will likely continue debating the dynamics between former TDE artists and Kendrick Lamar, Reason seems more interested in correcting misinformation and making sure his words are represented accurately.
